An exciting two-hour stroll through the peaceful old town of Geneva was enjoyed by eight members of the Cornell Club of Switzerland on the first Sunday of Advent 2024. At the close of the 38th Thanksgiving Gala the night before, our distinguished member and Genfer (native of Geneva) Jean-Robert Bugnion spontaneously offered this tour of his hometown.
With remarkable passion, historical insight, and a gift for storytelling, Jean-Robert brought Geneva’s rich past to life. Over two captivating hours, the peaceful streets of the Old Town revealed fascinating stories, some of which completely shifted how we understand this storied city.
The Only King of Geneva
The tour featured highlights such as the Only King of Geneva. A surprising exception in a city never governed by a king.
Cathedral Saint Pierre
The iconic Gothic Cathedral Saint Pierre featured prominently, from a distance with its impressive towers and from within its colorful chapel.

Julius Caesar’s Geneva
Near Cathedral St. Pierre, the L’Ancien Arsenal depicts three historic events of Geneva of which one is the crossing of the Rhône River by Julius Caesar and his army, who took advantage of the easier crossing in Geneva with its island strategically located in the middle of the river.
Festive Preparations
Geneva was decorated with festive flags in anticipation of the Escalade, celebrating another historic event in Geneva’s history which features races of all kinds, walks, and music. This year the race took place on December 7th and 8th 2024.
This fantastic tour ended with a spectacular view from the longest bench in the world, overlooking the Reformation Wall, a perfect ending to an inspiring morning.
Special thanks to Jean-Robert Bugnion for sharing his knowledge and passion, and to Jürg Hari for capturing these unforgettable moments in beautiful photographs!
