The Cornell Club of Switzerland marked its 38th Thanksgiving weekend with a splendid celebration in the cosmopolitan city of Geneva. This annual tradition brought together Cornellians and friends for a memorable experience blending culture, community, and gastronomy.
A Journey Through Time at the Patek Philippe Museum
The weekend commenced on Saturday afternoon with a private guided tour of the renowned Patek Philippe Museum. Attendees were immersed in a captivating journey through five centuries of horological art, tracing the evolution of watchmaking from early royal timepieces to the intricate marvels of modern precision technology. The exquisite collection, each piece more stunning than the last, sparked lively conversations about which masterpiece one would take home — if only we could! The two-hour tour flew by, leaving everyone fascinated and eager for more.
Annual General Meeting at the President Wilson Hotel
Later that afternoon, members gathered at the luxurious Hotel President Wilson for the Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). President Christophe Zimmerli presented an engaging overview of the Club’s activities, including highlights from past events, financial updates, and exciting plans for 2025. The AGM also saw the reappointment of all Board Members and a unanimous vote to adjust membership fees, ensuring the Club’s continued vitality and sustainability.
A Thanksgiving Gala to Remember
Saturday evening unfolded with the Thanksgiving gala dinner, held in the Hotel’s elegant Salon Appolon. The evening began with a champagne aperitif, where trays of gourmet hors d’oeuvres were passed as participants reconnected with familiar faces and welcomed newcomers. Among the distinguished guests were Cornellians from neighboring France and Germany, including Kiki Li, Co-President of the Cornell Club of France, and Wolfgang Konrad, President of the Princeton Club of Germany and a Cornell Club of Germany member. The Club welcomed Gjini Spanca, a recent Cornell graduate and recipient of partial sponsorship from our Club, highlighting our commitment to supporting the next generation of Cornellians.
The dinner itself was a culinary delight — a turkey feast with a local gourmet twist, featuring locally sourced ingredients prepared by a Michelin-starred kitchen. During the meal, new attendees introduced themselves, sharing their Cornell connections and stories. The evening concluded with lively conversations at the Hotel lounge bar, stretching late into the night.
Sunday Stroll and Farewell
On Sunday morning, participants staying at the Hotel enjoyed a leisurely breakfast overlooking the serene Geneva Lake. For those keen to explore more of Geneva’s rich history, Jean-Robert Bugnion, a longtime Club member, led a fascinating walking tour of the old town, unveiling the city’s storied past and architectural treasures.
A Heartfelt Thank You
This spectacular weekend would not have been possible without the tireless dedication of the event organizer, Christophe Zimmerli, along with the invaluable contributions of Lhney Steiner and Maria Franceschi, whose behind-the-scenes efforts brought this unforgettable celebration to life. Their dedication and passion exemplify the spirit of the Cornell community.
