We are delighted to announce that the 2026 Cornell Club hike will take us to the charming region of Lyss, from where we will walk to Aarberg and continue along the Hagneck Canal all the way to Lake Biel.
This scenic route offers more than just beautiful nature, it tells the story of one of Switzerland’s most remarkable river engineering projects. The diversion of the Aare River into Lake Biel transformed the landscape entirely, draining formerly swampy land and creating fertile ground that today supports extensive vegetable farming.

At the same time, nature has reclaimed its place. The “Alte Aare,” now a peaceful side stream, is rich in biodiversity and a testament to ongoing conservation efforts. Along the way, we will also encounter the impressive Hagneck Canal and its remarkable fish ladder, a highlight of modern ecological engineering.
A special stop will be the historic town of Aarberg, a true gem filled with character and centuries of history.
Further details and the full program will follow soon. Be sure to mark your calendars!
