Urban Art Discovery in Basel

On a radiant summer afternoon, twenty Cornell alumni, family, and friends gathered in Basel for a special exploration of the city’s vibrant street art scene. While Basel is internationally renowned for its world-class cultural institutions such as the Kunstmuseum Basel, Fondation Beyeler, and the Art Basel fair, our tour revealed another layer of the city’s creative spirit: its dynamic street art and graffiti culture.

Our guide, Urs Naef of the Artstübli – Art & Culture association, led us on a fascinating walking tour through Basel’s old town, hidden alleyways, public squares, and bustling commercial areas. Along the way, we encountered both monumental murals and tucked-away works that might otherwise go unnoticed. Urs shared insights into the lives of local and international graffiti artists, whose creations enliven the city’s walls. Some works were officially commissioned by the municipality or local businesses, while others appeared spontaneously (midnight gestures of artistic rebellion).

One of the most intriguing aspects of the tour was learning about the unwritten “honor system” among graffiti artists. Large-scale, high-quality pieces, especially those by well-known artists, are rarely defaced. A hierarchy of walls also exists certain spaces that serve as training grounds for emerging artists, while high-visibility locations may demand prior permission from property owners or the city.

After our inspiring walk, the group gathered at Restaurant Ufer7, located directly on the banks of the Rhine River. Over a refreshing aperitif of local wines and finger foods, we enjoyed lively conversations, and a shared appreciation for Basel’s unique blend of classical and contemporary art culture.

The Cornell Club of Switzerland extends heartfelt thanks to Bernie MacCabe for organizing this memorable event and to all participants for their enthusiastic support. It was a day that celebrated not only the city’s artistic diversity but also the enduring spirit of our Cornell community.
