The Cornell Club of Switzerland had the exceptional privilege of touring On Labs, the global headquarters of the iconic performance running shoe company, On, in Zurich. Hosted by Cornell alumnus Nicolas “Nico” Martin (B.Arch. 2012), Head of Business Development, Special Ventures at On, our group enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at this innovative and dynamic workspace.
The headquarters, which accommodates approximately 1,000 employees, is thoughtfully divided into “neighborhoods” spanning three floors each. These neighborhoods foster a sense of community, offering distinct spaces for focus, collaboration, and social interaction. From the Roots level, a mountain trail-inspired path weaves its way upward through themed areas – Earth, Forest, Lake, Mountain, and Cloud, each reflecting natural elements and promoting a spirit of movement and exploration.
Beyond its open, flexible workspaces, On Labs boasts a multitude of amenities: a conferencing hub, bar, canteen, labs, workshops, studios, rooftop garden, library, and even an exhibition space. The layout exemplifies the company’s ethos of blending innovation with well-being. As we explored, breathtaking views of Zurich’s cosmopolitan skyline and the majestic Swiss Alps served as a constant reminder of On’s connection to nature and design.
Of particular interest was the On Labs itself, a cutting-edge facility where the company’s groundbreaking products are envisioned, developed, and tested. Nico explained how this space embodies On’s commitment to innovation and its collaborative efforts with the local community, including inviting startups to engage with the brand on site.
The tour ended on a high note with a lively and delicious aperitif, allowing us to reflect on what we had experienced and to network with fellow alumni. Some members even took advantage of the opportunity to shop at the On retail store, bringing home a piece of the brand’s pioneering spirit.
We departed On Labs feeling thoroughly inspired, with a newfound appreciation for the brand’s remarkable achievements and an undeniable sense of office envy.
