On the Trail of the Last Abbess and Tour of St. Fridolin’s Cathedral

Saturday, 8 June 2024 – Bad Säckingen (Germany)

The Cornell Club of Switzerland will spend the day in “The Trumpeter’s City” with author Sandhya Hasswani. She will take us on a historical tour of the High Rhein in the 18th century through the story of Mari-Anna Franziska von Hornstein, the last abbess in Bad Säckingen.

The historical novel written by Hasswani, “Die letzte Äbtissen”, tells the story of the abbey itself, the destruction by fire and rebuilding of the cathedral, the history of the period, the fates of families caught up in historical events, the influence and role of the Catholic church, and much more. The cathedral itself in Bad Säckingen (St. Fridolin’s) has a central role in the story.

The program on Saturday 8 June, “On the Trail of the Last Abbess“, includes a guided tour in English of St. Fridolin’s Cathedral led by Adelheid Lang, who has been the cathedral’s archivist for more than 20 years. We will also break for lunch at the Restaurant Knöpfle.

We look forward to seeing you there on this fascinating tour!
