Event Details
Sandhya Hasswani has spent the last few years working intensively on local history, especially the 18th century and the Austrian frontier. Her research on the Habsburgs, the settlement of the Banat and the development of society, life, and work in the 18th century, as well as the turning point heralded by Napoleon, has been incorporated into her historical novel “The Last Abbess”. In the morning session, Ms. Hasswani will tell us about the life of Mari-Anna Franziska von Hornstein, explain to us who the women were who lived in the abbey, and introduce us to the era of the 18th century on the High Rhine.
We will break for a guided tour of St. Fridolin’s Cathedral, lead by Adelheid Lang. This will be followed by lunch at the Restaurant Knöpfle.
After the lunch break, the program will resume with Sandhya Hasswani speaking about the influence of the Habsburgs and Napoleon, and explaining how the German mediatisation (redistribution and secularization of territories belonging to the Austrian frontier) sealed the fate of the abbey and affected nearby territories, resulting among other things, in the formation of the Grand Duchy of Baden.
The formal part of the day will end by 16h00.
Bad Säckingen is compact and has sights worth seeing after the program is finished. Here is a link with a walking tour and supplemental information (in German).
